The work of Max Angus is inspired by the everyday surroundings, from village trees to saltmarshes. The detail is captured with a pencil or charcoal on paper and is just enough to create the outlines for linocuts on returning to the studio.
Max cuts her linocut blocks with consideration for light, shade and overlapping of colours to make additional colour combinations. The limited palette may often take more than three weeks to finalise, with each colour chosen being dependent on the relationship and quantity of the adjacent colours and super-imposed blocks.
‘Looking back at my work, my linocuts reflect my year and are like a diary of my time.’
